All-new 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S unveiled

Sepang - The lifestyle, the driving pleasure, the Porsche experience – it was all uncovered at the launch of the new Porsche 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S - codenamed s991 - that took place on 17th February 2012 at the Sepang International Circuit. This new iconic sports car was unveiled by Sime Darby Auto Performance (SDAP), the official Porsche importer in Malaysia. The momentous occasion marked the arrival of the seventh generation of the 911 was witnessed by Porsche customers, friends and media alike.

Guests were also entertained with a myriad of showcases on previous generations of the classic sports car, other models and highlights of recent events such as the Porsche Circuit Training Session 2012. Arnt Bayer, Chief Executive Officer of SDAP, greeted the crowd and gave an enthusiastic speech to start the event stating that 911 is the icon of Porsche, this is the heart and soul of our brand, this is an indication that we will continue to focus on our sports cars, with more upcoming motorsports events here at Sepang that will showcase our sports cars’ performance. The event was further accentuated with the extravagant arrival of the new 911 Carrera S, driven out by Christer Ekberg, Managing Director of Porsche Asia Pacific.

One of the highlights of the launch was the lucky draw that picked 50 lucky winners for the chance to ride in the new 911. The Taxi Ride, as it was called, gave chances for guests to experience exhilarating joyrides in the 911 Carrera S. Another exciting highlight was the specially arranged 911 GT3 Cup Car, where 20 lucky guests were chosen to ride a lap each around the circuit with Melvin Moh, one of the young and upcoming drivers in the Malaysian motorsports. He raced successfully in numerous Formula series as well as the Famous Malaysia Merdeka Endurance Race.

The atmosphere of the event was one of pure excitement and prestige, in concurrence with the launch of one of the most sophisticated and technologically-advanced sports car in its age – the new 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S.

The new 991 - C2 and C2S - offers up to 16 percent lower fuel consumption and emissions combined with greater everyday practicality, courtesy of its all-new lightweight body, further drive-train efficiencies and new suspension systems. Due to premiere on Malaysian grounds on the 17th February 2012, the new 911 raises the driving dynamics bar yet another notch with completely revamped suspension featuring numerous redeveloped components.

The wheelbase is now longer, and combined with wider track width at the front, it gives way to a more sure-footed tracking and roll stability at high longitudinal and cornering speeds. The innovative aluminium steel lightweight body, combined with a raft of new components and functions, benefits efficiency and driving dynamics in equal measure. With an overall length of just 4.5 metres and an unchanged maximum width of approximately 1.8 metres, the new 911 remains as the most compact sports car in its class.

The stylistic evolution of the 911’s design is distinct from every angle. Viewed from the side, new styling, larger alloy wheels and the more protuberant windscreen endows the 911 with an even jauntier, more coupe-like character. To augment the new exterior, Porsche designers created an interior architecture which takes its cue from the Porsche Carrera GT. The driver is integrated more closely with the cockpit, made possible by the centre console that rises up to the front with the high-mounted gear lever or gear selector located close to the steering wheel in typical motorsport fashion. The classic and established Porsche touches, such as the five round instruments with the centrally located rev counter and the ignition lock to the left of the steering wheel are also found in the new model.

All Coupés get by with significantly less than 10 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres. Fuel consumption and emissions are up to 16 percent lower compared with its predecessor. The Carrera with the new 350 hp, 3.4-litre boxer engine and optional Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) consume a mere 8.2 litres per 100 kilometres based on the NEDC – 1.6 l/100 km less than its predecessor. Also, at 194 g/km CO2, it is the first Porsche sports car to make it below the 200 g/km mark.

With the Carrera S as well, with its 3.8-litre boxer engine and what is now 400 hp, fuel consumption when paired with the optional PDK is reduced by 14 percent or 1.5 l/100 km to 8.7 l/100 km despite 15 hp (11 kW) more power. That equates to CO2 emissions of 205 g/km.

Direct injection in the engine is now provided by multi-hole injectors, which accomplishes smooth running and matchless power by improving mixture formation. Through new aluminium camshaft positioners, the weight of each engine has been reduced by about one kilogram and the possible maximum engine speed was raised to 7,800 rpm. All in all, the new 911 engine is up to 16 percent more economical and up to 15 hp more powerful than that of its predecessor.

The prices of the new models will be communicated shortly. They will include a 4-year free maintenance and warranty program with market-specific equipment.

All-new Porsche 911 (991) retails from RM430k* in Malaysia!

Unbelievable right? I know. At RM430,000 for the base Carrera 3.4 it is quite a steal - but this figure is actually *before all tariffs (import, excise and sales taxes) applicable in Malaysia. Sime-Darby Auto Performance (SDAP), the official distributor of Porsche locally will communicate on the final pricing later to all Porschephiles. My guess is that the Carrera and Carrera S will be to be in the region of RM800k to RM900k.

In the meantime, we were taken on a demo lap at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) last night and it was awesome the way Porsche's new PDCC - Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control - took care of fast corners around the Malaysian F1 circuit. Debuting for the first time in a 911 series, it is actually active anti-roll bars working on both axles in conjuction with Torque Vectoring Plus working on the rear - resulting in the new 911 tracking corners proverbally like it was rails! Cool.

2012 Porsche 911 (series 991)

Here are some initial, undisguised pictures of the all-new Porsche 911, codenamed 991 for model year 2012.

Indications are that the base-model Carrera will be powered by a marginally downsized 3.4L boxer-6 (from current 3.6L) pushing about 350hp, while the Carrera S will sport a 3.8L lump good for some 400hp. To be carried over will be the 7-speed PDK dual-clutch auto tranny, while the manual will get an uprated, extra-cogged 7-speeder.

The most distinctive change from the outgoing 997 series - noticeable from these initial pics - is the rear clam shell engine cover (hood), altering this iconic sports coupe' butt perspective quite a fair bit, along with more-squinting LED rear lights cluster. Meanwhile, the almost 100mm increase in wheelbase doesn't seem to make a lumbering dolphin of the 2012 Porsche 911 - which is reported to enable a hybrid drivetrain and battery pack to be accommodated in this new 991 series of Porsche's most identifiable, iconic shape for the last five decades and still counting...

Expect the right-hand drive version of the all-new Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S to be in Malaysia by perhaps Q3 2012.

All-new Porsche Cayenne previewed: price starts from RM550k in Malaysia!

This is the first new Porsche model to be unveiled under Porsche's new distributor in Malaysia, Sime Darby Auto Performance. Indeed, it has been quite a stellar performance under this new franchise holder's helmship, as reflected in its price tags, which have been revised to the tune of RM100,000 to RM150,000 downwards across the model range.

In a sneak preview of Porsche's all-new Cayenne for Porsche Club Malaysia (PCM) members, the 2nd generation Cayenne has been revealed to be priced as follows:

Cayenne 3.6 V6 - RM550,000
Cayenne S 4.8 V8 - RM680,000
Cayenne S Hybrid - RM720,000
Cayenne Turbo - RM940,000

All models come with 4-years free service + 4-years warranty.
Still want that BMW X5, X6 or even the Audi Q7?

Is this the all-new Porsche 998 slated for 2011/2012?

Well...at least according to German car mag 'Auto Bild'. Their renderings of the all-new Porsche 911 seem the brightest of em all - among all the grey/black spy shots thus far. On thing is clear though: the return of the new 998 series to the roots of the 993 - the stalked wing mirrors being a very prominent feature - with more upright headlamps versus the outgoing 997. However unlike the 993, the new 998 test mules have been spotted to have longer wheelbase, a more sloping rear screen and wider tracks too. Expect further power output hikes with probably even the base Carrera 3.6 with maximum punch of closer to perhaps 390 hp (currently 355 hp).

Porsche Club Malaysia Melaka Drive May 2010

Porsche Club Malaysia (PCM) has had a successful drive to Melaka's MIMC Go-Kart track on 8th May 2010. With well over 40 cars and overwhelming participation in a track drive clinic on that Saturday. With the obligatory cornering lines, brake-and-steer, trail braking etc exercises resulting useful driving pointers being given to our fellow club members.

A time attack session was held and the winner was Chan Kien Seng in his limited Sport Edition black Cayman S (manual 6 -speed) proving once again that a mid-engined coupe - though less powerful - can be superior to the iconic rear-engined Porsche 911s. Nevertheless, the runner-up was a manic Porsche (996) GT2 on semi-slicks driven by Garry Adam - just 2 secs behind the winning Cayman S bearing registration number: "WHY 911". A very thought provoking registration plate don't you think?

Most Powerful Street-Legal Porsche of all Times: The new 911 GT2 RS

The time: seven minutes, 18 seconds on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. The power: 620 hp. The weight: 1,370 kilograms in road trim with all fluids on board. The car: the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS. The GT2 RS is making its world debut at the Moscow Auto Show on August 25th.

The future top GT model marking the absolute climax in the 911 range is the fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart. With power up by 90 hp and weight down by 70 kilograms or 154 lb in comparison with the 911 GT2, the new 911 GT2 RS has a power-to-weight ratio of just 2.21 kilos or 4.9 lb per horsepower, by far the best power/weight ratio in its class. Obviously, these are the ideal ingredients for an ultra-high-performance sports car with supreme agility, truly blistering performance on the road, and of course exemplary Porsche Intelligent Performance. For despite this extra power and performance, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions versus the 911 GT2 are down by approximately 5 per cent to 11.9 ltr/100 km (equal to 23.7 mpg imp) and 284 g/km.

The 3.6 litre six-cylinder boxer engine boosted by two turbochargers with variable turbine geometry - exclusive to Porsche in its combination with a gasoline engine - drives the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Developed especially for the 911 GT2 RS, sports tyres measuring 325/30 ZR 19 convert this massive power into equally massive performance and acceleration on the road: 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, 0 to 200 km/h in just 9.8 seconds, and 0 to 300 km/h in 28.9 seconds. Top speed is 330 km/h.

Equally supreme stopping power on this ultra-high-performance sports car comes from PCCB composite ceramic brakes. Appropriate longitudinal and crosswise dynamics are ensured by the sporting RS set-up of the springs, PASM Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management, anti-roll bars, as well as the dynamic engine mounts and PSM Porsche Stability Management.

In its looks the new 911 GT2 RS stands out clearly from the 911 GT2 above all through the lavish use of carbon-fibre-reinforced (CFR) components in matt-black surface finish, even wider wheels and flared wheel arches at the front, new 911 GT2 light-alloy wheels with central locking, as well as ”GT2 RS“ model designations on the doors and rear lid. The upgraded front spoiler lip and the rear spoiler lip made of CFR and now 10 millimetres or almost 0.4 inches higher, again in surface carbon finish, ensure the right aerodynamic precision as well as extra downforce.

The interior also exudes the flair of sporting performance in virtually every detail, featuring lightweight bucket seats made of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic in carbon surface finish and lightweight door panels with door opening straps. The basic interior colour is black, contrasting attractively with features such as the seat centre sections and the roof lining as well as segments on the steering wheel rim. The gearshift and handbrake lever are both finished in red alcantara.

Limited to just 500 units, the 911 GT2 RS will be available in Europe from September 2010, in the USA from October 2010. The Euro base price is 199,500.- Euro. Including VAT and national specifications/equipment the new 911 GT2 RS will retail in Germany at a price of 237,578 Euro.

19-inch Sport Classic wheels available for retrofitting on the Porsche 911

One the the most iconic retrofit highlights from Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is the 19-inch Sport Classic alloy wheels. Sporting the unmistakable look of Porsche’s legendary Fuchs rims and developed especially for the 911 Sport Classic - built in a production run of just 250 units - it is now available for retrofitting to any of the 911.

Re-interpreted in individual style, the wheels in five-spoke design with the rim star painted black, the wheel hump in gloss-lathed finish, and the coloured Porsche logo on the wheel hub, are a genuine eye-catcher. Introduced by Porsche for the first time in 1966, these unique wheels are now making a nostalgic return.

The new wheels measure 8.5 J x 19 ET 55 and come together with tyres in 235/35 ZR 19 (front) and, respectively, 11.5 J x 19 ET 50 with tyres in 305/30 ZR 19 (rear) on all current all-wheel-drive models of the 911 Carrera and Targa as well as the 911 Turbo at an all-in price per set of Euro 5,569.20 including VAT (cars with tyre pressure control Euro 5,866.70).

Porsche Aerokit Cup for the 911

The newly developed Aerokit Cup available on all versions of the 911 Carrera Coupé shows a close and direct link to the fastest brand trophy in the world, the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. At the front of the car the most outstanding feature is the new apron with its striking trim bars in the centre air intake and the characteristic spoiler lip.

Already available on new cars at a price of Euro 4,968.25 (including VAT), the Aerokit Cup may now also be retrofitted on current models of the 911 from Porsche Tequipment at Euro 4,522.00 (including VAT), plus fitting and paintwork.

While so far the Aerokit with its particularly sporting look was not available to drivers of the 911 Cabriolet and Targa (997), the new, striking Sport Design front apron now closes this gap, with the spoiler lip matched aerodynamically to the regular rear spoiler.

Naturally, the new front panel also fits on all other versions of the 911 Carrera and 911 Targa in the 997 model series. Finished in the same colour as the car itself, the front apron in Sport Design blends harmoniously with the overall contours and silhouette of the 911.

At the rear the unique rear lid with the wing fitted in position takes up the highly successful design of the former model. It almost goes without saying that all components have been optimised in Porsche’s wind tunnel to improve both driving behaviour and aerodynamics.

The Aerokit retails on new cars at a price of Euro 2,368.10 (including VAT) and is available from Porsche Exclusive. It may also be retrofitted individually by Porsche Tequipment at a price of Euro 2,159.85 (including VAT), plus the cost of fitting and paintwork.
