2011 Hyundai Accent/Verna

Hyundai has got all its bases covered as far as its new range of saloon/sedans for 2011 model year is concerned - from the entry-level B-segment Verna/Accent right up to the D-segment Sonata. With of course, the newly unveiled C-segment Elantra/Avante being the most balanced of the lot - at least aesthetically and proportion wise. Boasting Hyundai's latest "fluidic design", the Accent is very much akin to a junior Sonata.

The 2011 Accent/Verna measures 4,340mm in length, 1,700mm in width, 1,460mm in height, and has a relatively generous wheelbase of 2,570mm - for a B-segment budget sedan.

The base Verna/Accent will beat with a 1.4-litre 4-pot capable of 106 hp and 135 Nm of torque - with the choice of a five-speed manual gearbox or four-speed automatic.
However, the larger displacement 1.6-litre that pushes out 121 hp and 155Nm of peak torque will be paired only with a four-speed automatic transmission.

Spy Pictures: 2009 Honda City scooped!

You probably would have seen these 2009 Honda City pictures somewhere in blogosphere or in your email 'Inbox' by now. If not, here they are in all its captured glory at a Honda PDI inspection bay somewhere, somehow. Rumoured to be launched by mid-December 2008, the all-new Honda City is an attractive little sedan despite its 'budget' B-segment costings target.

Frontal visage depicts Honda's new design language. As seen in the 3-D grille design (ala FCX Clarity), slim-slanty headlamps, loss of body coloured claddings between grille & headlights and a more sculpted front bumper. Foglamps section reminds one of the new Accord.

1.5 i-VTEC lump seen lurking in the engine bay. No more i-DSI option for the 2009 City. Likely 5-speed auto tranny similar to the new Jazz.

Dash design simple and low rent. Centre console portion a wee bit gawky, with A/C controls/switches section aping old Vios to a certain extent!

Seats looked adequately sized (for its class). No short seat bottom like your 'Desirable' arch rival please Honda!

Steering nicked from 8th gen Civic, Stream et al. High-spec version of new City likely to have paddle shifters...and on-steering audio switches too from Honda Malaysia?

Solid disc adorn the rear axle. Take note of the sticky anti-rust coating in wheel arch. Great for improving NVH as well. Are we to get it too for our Melaka-born Citys?

Errr...doesn't this butt remind you of the 8th generation Mitsubishi Galant (1999-2003)?

*Thanks to reader BMW.Toyota for these pictures!

All-new Honda Jazz defies conventional pricing in Malaysia

The all-new Jazz has been launched by Honda Malaysia at a glitzy media-and-public invitation- only event at the KL Convention Centre yesterday. True to its 'Defy Convention' tag line, the fully-imported Jazz can be yours for RM104,800 for the 'S' spec while the premium version tagged 'V' is at RM109,800 (OTR with insurance).

Larger in cabin and longer at its wheelbase by 50mm, the 2nd generation Jazz continues its space, versatality and practicality themes in a compact package. Quite a few have lamented about the new Jazz mimicking much of the old, especially the rear but towards this, For Wheels reckoned: "Why radically change a proven formula?"

Appearing gorgeous along with the sultry models is the all-new Jazz in Cerulean Blue Metallic looking much re-energised and refreshed.

Powering the 2008/09 Jazz is Honda's L15A 1.5L i-VTEC powerplant capable of 120ps @ 6,600rpm and 145Nm of max torque at 4,800rpm. Also new to the 2nd generation Jazz is a 5-speed autobox in place of the predecessor's efficient and economical CVT. The compact 1,497cc 4-pot now wears a 16-valved SOHC instead of the previous' twelve. i-VTEC 'trickery' denotes both variable valve timing as well as variable valve lift mechanism. Honda claims a 24km/l fuel economy achieved with Japan Domestic Market's (JDM) Fit with CVT. However, with a torque converter tranny I truly doubt that will be achievable here in Malaysia, what's more with our A/C-always-on and real-world congested traffic conditions.

Below is the Modulo-kitted Jazz (in Taffetta White), costing an extra RM3,000. As a package, the premium will buy you fog lights, tailgate spoiler, iluuminated side step garnish, alloy foot pedals, interior foot lights and trunk tray. The 16" Modulo alloy wheels retail for RM2,480, for a set of four. These items can also be opted for individually.

With the new Jazz just launched, it is interesting to have more than a few glimpses of what the upcoming 2009 Honda City has in store for us...hopefully soon!

2009 Honda City: September unveiling in Thailand...mid-December 2008 launch in Malaysia?

This is the latest spy-picture of the all-new 2009 Honda City found to be circulating in cyberspace, courtesy of pantip.com
Although sharing the same mechanicals and underpinnings as the soon-to-be-launched new Jazz 1.5i-VTEC (due 20th August in Malaysia), the 3rd generation City Sedan will wear a different set of metal sheets with of course, the all-important boot for our ASEAN market generally. The external door handles seem to be the more 'premium' and ergonomic tug-pull type, unlike its hatchback cousin.

Will Malaysians get to to see the real thing before the year runs out?
